“Rather Be” is a contemporary hit, as it reached the international charts and brought the relatively recent formed band, success and popularity. It was an instant hit, topping the Billboard DanceMix Show Airplay, reaching number two on the US Hot Dance Electronic Songs and number ten on Billboard Hot 100.
“Rather Be” was released on January 17th, 2014 and it’s a song from the British group Clean Bandits. It was written by James Napier, Nicole Marshall and Jack Patterson. The song is played in G minor, with a tempo of 121 beats per minute. It has a variety of instruments in its musical composition, which includes bass, vocals, piano, synth blips and violin.
“Rather Be” was produced by Jack Patterson and Grace Chatto.
The single received mainly positive reviews from music critics, being described as “a mushy love song”. The song was first featured on December 4th, 2013, at the BBC Radio. It was issued and promoted by Warner Music and it’s part of their debut album, “New Eyes”.
The song was also an international success and it peaked number one in the UK Singles Chart and the UK Dance Chart, as well as in many other countries, such as Sweden, Israel, Norway, Italy, Poland, Ireland, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Finland and others. It also reached the top in other important charts in Denmark, France, Belgium, Lebanon, New Zealand, Australia and dozens others.
“Rather Be” was a great commercial success, having sold over 1 100 000 copies in the United Kingdom, where it was certified double platinum. It was also certified double platinum in Sweden, Denmark and Italy. It received triple platinum in Australia.
The music video was filmed in Tokyo and it was made by the band members themselves. It was released on December 5th, 2013, right after being first featured on BBC Radio. It soon became viral and it has to this day, over 140 million views on YouTube.
Clean Bandits offered a live performance of “Rather Be”, along with a cover of “Royals”, a single belonging to Lorde, at the BBC Radio 1. They offered another live performance of the single at the Summertime Ball, T In The Park and Glastonbury.
“Rather Be” was used in Coca Cola and Marks&Spencer commercials as well as in the ending credits of a Major League Baseball athlete’s montage. The song is a mixture of the genres electronic and synthpop. It has a length of 3:49 minutes.
