“Bohemian Rhapsody” received a huge demand from the audience which rushed to the stores before even being released. It topped the UK charts and broke many records, such as the only song to be a UK Christmas number one twice, and also the only one to become a number one twice, using the same version. After Freddie Mercury’s death, in 1991, “Bohemian Rhapsody” topped the charts for five weeks. It reached top ten twice in the United States, on the Billboard Hot 100. Also, it was certified golf by the RIAA, after selling more than one million copies.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” was released on October 31st, 1975 and it’s a song from the epic British band Queen. It was written by Freddie Mercury at his home, in London. He recorded it in Rockfield Studio 1, in August of 1975. Mercury used a grand piano during the sessions, which were held together by a drum click. Mercury, Taylor and May were responsible for the vocals and rehearsed up to twelve hours a day.
The full recording sessions took more than three weeks to be completed due to the elaborated nature of the song. There are many changes in the song’s style and tempo which is a very unusual for the genre. It has six parts: introduction, ballad, guitar solo, opera, hard rock and finale. It is believed that the lyrics reflect part of Mercury’s life and complex personality. There has been much controversy regarding the lyrics, with some critics claiming that they are about a murderer’s epiphany and some stating that they have no meaning at all, and were composed to line up with the music.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” drew a line in musical videos’ making, so that record companies started promoting their singles through promotional videos. The video for the song stayed at number one for many weeks. In 1977, “Bohemian Rhapsody” received two Grammy Awards nominations and has become, ever since, one of the most popular songs in music history. The British Phonographic Industry named it “the best British single of the period 1952-1977”. Guinness Book Of Records named it the “top British single of all time”. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame’s list of “500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll”.
The single’s achievements don’t stop here: according to a poll conducted by BBC World Service, it’s one the world’s favorite songs, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame, it comes second among the most played singles on the British radio stations and it reaches the first ten in most of the tops regarding the best singles to have ever been released.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is one of the most complex songs ever created and by the time of its release, it was the most expensive single in music history. It is one of the top ten best-selling and most beautiful songs, regardless of the genre. Its long history is charged with success, popularity and demand so that, years since it was created, it remains a song for all generations.
