"Skyfall" was released on October 5th, 2012 and it's a song from British singer, Adele. The release date was the celebration of 50 years since the first "James Bond" movie as the song also represents the theme song for the movie's sequel, which premiered in 2012. In 2011, Adele was asked to record a song for the film, which would be named "Skyfall".
Still hesitant, the singer was suggested to use the song "Nobody Does It Better", from Carly Simon as the inspiration for writing the lyrics. It was eventually written by the artist alongside Paul Epworth and produced by the latter, whom she already worked for on her previous albums. According to Epworth the process was a difficult one, as they tried to
"do something that was simultaneously dark and final, like a funeral, and to try and turn it into something that was not final. A sense of death and rebirth".
The lyrics have also been described by critics as "slightly sinister" as well as "romantic".
"Skyfall" belongs to the Orchestral pop genre. The track is played in C minor and it has 76 beats per minute.
The song received mainly positive feedback from music critics, whom described it as "a great James Bond theme", "a return to form", "wholly satisfying and worth the wait", "majestic ballad" and offered it four stars out of five.
"Skyfall" received much recognition, which wasn't reflected just in the reviews but also in the awards. It won an Academy Award for "Best Original Song", a Golden Globe with the same title, a Grammy for "Best Song Written for Visual Media" and many others. The song reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, number three on Billboard's "Adult Alternative Songs" and number two on the UK Singles Chart. It became an international success, as it topped the charts worldwide. The countries that fell in love with the single include South Korea, Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Israel, Hungary, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium and various many others. It also topped the iTunes stone in no more than ten hours after its release.
"Skyfall" was a great commercial success, having sold more than five million copies worldwide. It was certified platinum by the RIAA, in Belgium, Germany, Denmark and in the United Kingdom. It was certified triple platinum and gold in Mexico, double platinum in Italy, four times platinum in Canada, and gold in New Zealand, Australia and Finland.
Adele offered a live performance of the song during the 85th edition of the Academy Awards.
"Skyfall" has been covered by numerous artists, such as Waka Flocka Flame, Our Last Night, Within Temptations and many others. The song proved to be a great success for the English singer, as well as one of the best theme songs of the "James Bond" sequels.
It was recorded throughout the year 2012, at the Abbey Road Studios, in the United Kingdom and it has a length of 4:46 minutes.
