“What A Wonderful World” was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss, whom was also responsible for the producing. The song has a positive message targeting the racial and political frictions at the time and stating that there is still hope for the “Wonderful World” we all live in.
The song was released on October 18th, 1967 and it’s a song from the famous singer, Louis Armstrong.
Though it was written especially for Armstrong, due to his power of connecting different cultures, the song was first offered to Tony Bennett, who refused it but eventually made many covers from it.
At the time of its release, “What A Wonderful World” did not receive promotion from ABC records, so it sold few copies in the United States. However, it topped the UK Singles chart and proved to be a success worldwide. It was also the best-selling single of 1968 in the United Kingdom. At the time, Louis Armstrong became the oldest artist ever to reach number one on UK Singles Chart.
The song was featured on the “What A Wonderful World” album, in 1968. “What A Wonderful World” started gaining more and more popularity and topped the charts in Austria and reached top ten in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Ireland and many other countries. The single was featured in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”, in the movie “Good Morning, Vietnam”, in the series “Family Matters” and other productions.
It was covered by a variety of artists, throughout the decades, including Anne Murray, Roy Clark, Kenny G, Sarah Brightman, Gloria Estefan, Ana Graceman, One Republic, Celine Dion, Guy Sebastian, Johnny Maestro, Katie Melua and dozens of other artists. In 1999, “What A Wonderful World” was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame. After being released digitally, the single sold over 2 100 000 copies, in the United States alone.
Its publishing rights are held by Carlin Music Corp., Memory Lane Music Group and Bug Music. “What A Wonderful World” stands for quality in all areas: it’s definitely one of the best songs belonging to the traditional pop genre, one of the most popular singles of all time and also one of the most positive messages ever to be sent through music. It is a standard in the industry and more than four decades since its release, it still receives appreciation worldwide.
