"Unravel" was released on the 27th of June 2012, along with the album Flowering. It's a song by Ling Tosite Sigure's band member, self titled TK from Ling Tosite Sigure. The band is actually a Japanese indie rock trio.
"Unravel" is also the opening scene for "Tokyo Ghoul", the anime television series. The anime series have been licensed by Funimation, in the United States of America, by Madman Entertainment, in Austria and by Anime Limited, in the United Kingdom. They were directed by Shuhei Morita and written by Chuji Mikasano. They aired between July 3rd, 2014 and September 18th, 2014 and ran a total of 12 episodes. The storyline follows the life of Ken Kaneki, a human that has to face his transformation into a half-human/half-ghoul, due to an organ transplant which turned him into this hybrid.
The song was released under the umbrella of Sony Music Associated Records, and it's a mix of musical genres such as Art Rock, Indie Rock and Alternative Rock. The song's lyrics are in Japanese.
The band was formed in 2002 and it approaches the styles post-hardcore and progressive rock, emo, math rock, alternative rock, shoegazing and post-rock. Like in the case of "Unravel", the band often inserts swift changes of tempo or mood and they also use complex guitar music and technical drumming. Another notable information is that they use female and male vocals which go soft to very high wails.
"Unravel" is sang by Pierre Nakano, Toru Kitajima and Miyoko Nakamura. The song is unique though depicting some similarities with the band's previous albums: "#4", their debut album, released in 2002, along with the band's formation, " Inspiration Is Dead", which followed in 2007 and represented their breakthrough and the moment when the indie rock trio Ling Tosite Sigure became extremely popular in Japan. After this, came the Countdown music festival, where they offered live performances and also many tours.
In 2008 they signed with Sony Music and went through a major tour throughout Japan, "I Was Music". In the same year, Ling Tosite Sigure broke the borders and performed in Brighton and London. Their next album was "Still a Sigure Virgin?" , which was released in 2010 and afterwards the band embarked into the "Virgin Killer" tour. In 2012, the indie rock trio released "Flowering", a solo album, and after that they signed with "JPU Records" and released their fifth album, "I'mperfect".
The anime television series "Tokyo Ghoul" encountered great success which led to "Unravel" as well to become very popular among its audience. After this, it became part of the public's preferences and started receiving demand.
Nowadays, Ling Tosite Sigure's "Unravel" is popular worldwide, not just in Japan and it's expected to become even more successful, after the beginning of the new season of "Tokyo Ghoul", which will air in 2015.
