“Hallelujah” is part of the album “Various Positions” and it was played during Cohen’s 1985 tour. During 1988-1993, the singer started offering different performances of the song, which only kept in common the last verse of the previous one.
The single belongs to the genre folk rock but features waltz and gospel influences. It was written in C major and the chords progress along with the lyrics.
“Hallelujah” was released in December, 1984 and it’s a song from Canadian singer Leonard Cohen. Despite John Cale’s successful cover version, the original song was written by Leonard Cohen and produced by John Lissauer. The artist wrote it in the Royalton Hotel, in New York City. It had an enormous length of 80 verses, and the original version of the song had numerous references from the Bible.
There have been many covers of the song, an enormous number of over 300 artists choosing to perform their own version of the song, many of them gaining notable success. John Cale’s version of “Hallelujah” featured in the movie “Shrek” and the television series “Scrubs”. It was part of his albums “I’m Your Fan” and “Fragments Of A Rainy Season” and it represents the basis for Cohen’s recent performances of the song, as well as for many other subsequent covers. Jeff Buckley’s cover was also a very successful one, appearing on his 1994 album “Grace”. In 2007, Q magazine ranked his version in their list of “Top 10 Greatest Tracks”.
In 2009, it reached number 3 on the “Triple J Hottest 100 Of All Time” and it’s expected to be inducted into the “Library Of Congress’s National Recording Registry”. John Legend stated that his song is “as near perfect as you can get”. Unfortunately, Buckley’s cover was released as a single in 2007, posthumously. In 2008, it reached number one on Billboard’s list “Hot Digital Songs”. It received a gold and platinum certification from the RIAA. The single has sold more than one million copies.
Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah” was used in many artistic projects, such as “Lord Of War”, “Feast Of Love”, and the television series “House MD”, “Criminal Minds”, “Ugly Betty”, “ER”, “Cold Case” and many others.
Other artists that made covers of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” also include Rufus Wainwright , k. d. Lang, Alexandra Burke, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Jason Castro and hundreds others.
“Hallelujah” was listed by Rolling Stones magazine as one of the greatest songs of all time.
